On-Line Sorting Technology for CCA-Treated Wood

A project by

in collaboration with:

Funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Agency, Innovative Recycling Grants Program

Summary of Project:

CCA-treated wood contaminates construction and demolition (C&D) waste with chromium and arsenic and its presence in this waste stream greatly limits recycling opportunities for untreated wood waste. The system to be installed at the Sarasota County facility is intended to serve as a demonstration project of new technologies for sorting CCA-treated wood from other wood types. The technologies considered include x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) both of which have been tested extensively on wood waste through laboratory studies conducted at the University of Miami and University of Florida. The system will be located at the Sarasota Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex, immediately adjacent to the recycled wood waste pile (unshredded) at the Meyer and Gabbert C&D Recycling Facility. Loads from this wood waste pile will be used to test the recycling system under field conditions.
